The UV index in much of India stays at very high to extreme levels for months, not weeks. Daily two-wheeler riders take the brunt of it. Here is a quick guide to when the sun is strongest in different states, and what helps.
Rajasthan and Gujarat
Dry heat and strong sun from March to June, with long, bright afternoons. Full arm and neck cover matters more than anything else. A light-coloured UPF 50+ jacket and plenty of water are the basics.
Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh
Hot and humid, with a long sunny season that runs well into July in many districts. Breathability matters here: pick a thin, quick-dry fabric so sweat does not build up under the jacket.
Karnataka and Telangana
Bengaluru and Hyderabad commuters spend long stretches in traffic at midday. Even on cloudy days a lot of UV gets through, so do not skip cover just because it is overcast.
Kerala
High UV levels before the monsoon, with humidity that makes sunscreen sweat off quickly. A cooling UPF jacket with thumb loops covers what cream misses.
Maharashtra, Delhi NCR and the north
April to June brings intense sun and heat. Long rides between 11 am and 4 pm are when protection matters most.
What works everywhere
- Cover arms, hands and the back of the neck with UPF 50+ fabric.
- Use SPF 30+ sunscreen on the face and reapply after two hours outdoors.
- Avoid long rides between 11 am and 3 pm when you can.
- Drink water before you ride, not only after.
VEYIL ships across India. The Cooling UV Sunscreen Jacket is ₹999, and UV arm sleeves are ₹499.
FAQ
What UV index is dangerous?
The WHO classes 8 to 10 as very high and 11+ as extreme. At these levels unprotected skin can burn in well under half an hour.
Do I need protection on cloudy days?
Yes. Clouds block heat more than they block UV, so you can still tan or burn.
