If you ride a two-wheeler in India, you already know the sun is not a summer problem. It is an every-day, every-trip problem. Your hands, forearms and the back of your neck take the most of it, because they are exposed and they face the sky for the whole ride.
Here is what actually works, in the order we would put it.
1. Cover the skin that faces the sun
On a scooter or bike, the parts that burn and tan first are the backs of your hands, your forearms and your neck. A helmet covers your head. Most riders leave everything else open.
Clothing is the most reliable protection because it does not wear off, sweat off or need reapplying. The catch is that ordinary cotton is hot and a thin, light-coloured cotton shirt lets a fair amount of UV through. That is why riders end up choosing between being cool and being covered.
2. Choose fabric made for sun, not for winter
A rated UPF 50+ fabric is tested to let through only a small fraction of UV. Look for three things in a riding layer:
- UPF 50+ rating so you know it actually blocks UV, not just light.
- Thin, quick-drying fabric so it does not trap heat at a signal.
- Coverage where it matters: a hood or high collar for the neck and thumb loops so the sleeves do not ride up and leave a gap at the wrist.
3. Keep sunscreen for the face
Sunscreen still has a job. Use it on your face and any skin your clothing leaves open. Just do not rely on it alone for a long ride. Most people apply far less than the amount used in lab testing, and it needs reapplying every couple of hours and after heavy sweating. Few riders stop to do that.
4. Do not trust clouds
A grey monsoon morning feels safe. A large share of UV still gets through cloud cover, which is why people come home tanned after an overcast day. If you ride daily, protect yourself daily.
5. Make it easy enough to do every day
The best protection is the one you will actually wear on a hot Tuesday. If it is bulky or sweaty, it goes back in the dickey. That was the reason we made the VEYIL Cooling UV Jacket: UPF 50+, ice-touch fabric that feels cool, a hood and thumb loops, and light enough to fold under the seat.
